Something A Little Closer To Home

I would love to say this post will be about an old photo I dug up in my attic.

And then I’ll start getting soppy and reminisce about old times blah blah ad infinitum.

Sadly, that’s not the case — I don’t even have an attic to begin with.

Singapore

(I’m in a foul mood. Beware.)

Earlier this week, local media revealed disturbing video images of how employees in the Nightingale Nursing Home mistreated an elderly stroke patient. This worried me.

Of course, I was disgusted. And so were many Singaporeans. But that’s not the only reason I worry.

Looking through many comments online by Singaporeans, I noticed something odd. Naturally, many of my fellow countrymen condemned the actions of the employees. But many also pointed out that, from the video images, the employees appeared like foreign. And so began the derogatory comments on foreign workers.

That’s the reason I worry.

The last time I checked, comments were all over the place . Many attributed the abuse to the nationality of the staff.

Only foreign nurses at hospital would made patient suffer and suffer throughout the whole night by ignoring all those helpless stroke patients..

Yes, I am disgusted too. And yes, I really wish for some action to be taken. But step out of the anger that is clouding your view and look. What is the key issue here?

“How to prevent such things from happening again.”

Nationality is secondary, if not irrelevant. Should the punishment be more severe because they are/aren’t Singapore-born? No.

Oh and for the ignorant ones — there is a distinct difference between foreign talents and foreign workers. I assure you, these employees are not talents, and those terms are not interchangeable.

On a completely unrelated note

Now that my little rant has ended, time for something more lighthearted. Notice the picture of a farmhouse? It actually has quite an interesting story behind it. Perhaps I will blog about that tomorrow. Come back soon to see it!

Ah yes, and just before i forget — check out the little “featured posts” corner at my homepage (and the little featured post that I bet you never saw, even though you saw my status update. It was even posted just minutes before the status update. Oh the irony.)

The point?

People always focus on the wrong things.
(Yes, some double entendre there.)
